The tall blue coal silos that have reminded the people of Pictou County of the Westray coal mine tragedy for nearly six years are about to come tumbling down. A Cape Breton company, All Steel Coatings Ltd., has been awarded an $847,770 contract to dismantle the silos and seal the portal to the mine, where 26 men died in a methane and coal dust explosion on May 9, 1992. The sealing will be done in such a way that the mine could be re-entered if a decision is made to try to recover the bodies of the eleven miners entombed there, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation and Public Works said yesterday.
