It is now 2¼ hours past high tide.  The A-frame hoist is moving
downward with the falling tide.  Is there now enough vertical working
space available for the workmen to be able to wrestle the heavy slings
in place, and wrap the chains around the plate girder span as required?

This strain gauge is used to measure the tension
in the hoist cable.  Multiplying the tension in this
one cable  by the  number  of times (ten  for  this
sheave arrangement) that the cable pulls upward
on the  suspended  load  provides, instantly and
continuously, an accurate measure of the
weight carried by the A-frame.
