This rotary control shaft (above) was used to operate the mechanism
to lock the closed swing shaft in place with the railway track
properly aligned so that trains could safely cross the bridge.
This mechanism, which must be engaged and locked before
a train can be driven across the swing span, ensures the
vertical and horizontal alignment of the running rails
at both ends of the swing span.
