A top hammer drill mounted on a long reach excavator is being positioned for
drilling a hole in the sea bottom, in preparation for underwater blasting.
There is a strong upstream current (from left to right in this view) caused by
the rising tide. The barge is being held in position, against this strong tidal
current, by the three spud legs, here seen to be fully deployed – extended
downward and pushed into the sea floor, to resist any horizontal
movement of the barge, while leaving it free to move vertically
as it is lifted by the swiftly rising sea surface. The tugboat
Lina, tightly lashed to the barge, is idling.
